Neolamprologus multifasciatus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika
Neolamprologus multifasciatus — the multi or multifasciatus — is the world's smallest cichlid (3 cm). In nature it forms large colonies around beds of Neothauma snail shells in Lake Tanganyika, with pairs defending individual shells. In the aquarium a species-only tank with a deep sand substrate and many small shells (escargot-style) allows this behaviour to be observed beautifully. Dominance hierarchies develop in larger groups.
Species-only tank recommended. pH 8.0–8.5. 5+ cm sand substrate. Provide 2–3 shells per fish (escargot/small shells). Group of 6–12. Feed: small dry foods, live artemia.
