Neolamprologus variostigma
Also known as: Variable-spot Shell Dweller, Variostigma Cichlid
Origin: Lake Tanganyika
Neolamprologus variostigma is a deepwater-associated shell dweller whose body patterning varies considerably between individuals — hence the species name — ranging from fine uniform spotting to blotch-like irregular markings on a sandy background. This variability, combined with limited export numbers, makes every specimen a genuinely individual fish and a conversation piece in any collection.
The species is collected from intermediate to somewhat deeper sandy zones in Lake Tanganyika and may require a slightly lower temperature than most Tanganyika shell dwellers — keeping the tank at the cooler end of the acceptable range (24–25 °C) is recommended. In other respects husbandry follows standard shell-dweller practice: fine sand, multiple shells, hard alkaline water.
Variostigma is best suited to the intermediate or advanced Tanganyika hobbyist who can provide stable conditions and source appropriate live or frozen foods. Its rarity means that obtaining a compatible pair or trio may require patience, but the species breeds readily once settled.
Water: pH 7.8–9.0, GH 12–20, KH 8–16, temperature 24–26 °C; slightly cooler than average. Tank: 60 L; fine sand; 5–6 shells; moderate flow; stable parameters critical. Feeding: Frozen Artemia, Cyclops, Mysis; quality micro pellets; twice daily. Breeding: Shell-spawner; standard Neolamprologus brood care; fry accept Artemia nauplii. Compatibility: Species tank preferred; compatible with mid-water Tanganyikans in larger tanks.
