About

Native to the lowland rivers of the Mamberamo basin in West Papua, Melanotaenia praecox is the most popular dwarf rainbowfish in the hobby. Males develop intense neon-blue flanks and bright red-orange fins, while females display yellow-tinted fins against a silver-blue body. A fast-moving, active schooler that does best in groups of six or more.

Care Guide

Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: 60 L+, planted with open swimming space and good water movement. Feeding: Omnivore; micro-pellets, fine flakes, and small frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp. Behaviour: Active and peaceful; males display vivid colour when kept in mixed-sex groups. Compatibility: Ideal with other small peaceful fish; avoid large boisterous tankmates.
