Melanotaenia praecox

Origin: Indonesia (West Papua, Mamberamo River)
Native to the lowland rivers of the Mamberamo basin in West Papua, Melanotaenia praecox is the most popular dwarf rainbowfish in the hobby. Males develop intense neon-blue flanks and bright red-orange fins, while females display yellow-tinted fins against a silver-blue body. A fast-moving, active schooler that does best in groups of six or more.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: 60 L+, planted with open swimming space and good water movement. Feeding: Omnivore; micro-pellets, fine flakes, and small frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp. Behaviour: Active and peaceful; males display vivid colour when kept in mixed-sex groups. Compatibility: Ideal with other small peaceful fish; avoid large boisterous tankmates.
