Neoophorus diazi
Also known as: Diaz's Goodeid, Pátzcuaro Goodeid
Origin: Lake Pátzcuaro, Michoacán, Mexico (captive bred)
Neoophorus diazi is a goodeid livebearer endemic to Lake Pátzcuaro in Michoacán, Mexico — one of the most ecologically important high-altitude lakes in Mexico that supports numerous endemic species. This goodeid has suffered severe population declines due to pollution, water extraction, and the introduction of exotic carp and tilapia.
In the aquarium, Neoophorus diazi is a relatively calm, hardy goodeid with a compact body and subtle but attractive iridescent scaling on the flanks. Males can develop orange or yellow tinting on the fins under good conditions.
Keeping and breeding this species in the hobby contributes directly to its conservation. It responds well to a planted species tank with stable, slightly cool water and regular small live food supplements.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–18; relatively cool and well-oxygenated. Tank: 80 L minimum; planted species tank; gentle to moderate flow. Feeding: Quality flake, live Daphnia and Artemia, spirulina wafers; varied diet. Breeding: Goodeid; gestation 55–70 days; 5–25 fry per litter; parents may eat fry — use separate tank. Compatibility: Peaceful; best in a goodeid community tank.
