Apistogramma resticulosa
Also known as: Net-fin Apisto, Resticulosa Dwarf Cichlid, Reticulated-fin Apistogramma
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma resticulosa is a prized collector's species from the Peruvian Amazon whose common name — 'Net-fin' — refers to the remarkable reticulated (net-like) patterning that appears across the dorsal and caudal fins of males in peak breeding condition. This intricate patterning is unique among Apistogramma and makes a breeding-ready male an extraordinarily beautiful fish.
The species is native to soft, acidic lowland streams and requires careful water management to remain in peak condition. Outside of breeding, A. resticulosa is a relatively modest-looking fish, making the transformation to full breeding dress all the more dramatic and rewarding for patient keepers.
This is a species for dedicated Apistogramma enthusiasts who appreciate the theatrical transformation that careful husbandry can produce.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 25–28°C, low conductivity. Tank: 60 L minimum; leaf litter, driftwood, and plant clumps; minimal surface agitation. Feeding: Live and frozen invertebrates preferred to maintain condition for fin development. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards exclusively; soft water critical. Compatibility: Peaceful small dither fish; avoid anything that would stress the male out of breeding condition.
