Nothobranchius neumanni
Also known as: Neumann's Nothobranch, Neumann's Killifish
Origin: Kenya, Tanzania
Nothobranchius neumanni is an annual killifish from seasonal pools in Kenya and Tanzania, occupying a transitional zone between the East African coastal lowlands and the interior plateau. Males display vivid orange-red body colouration with a distinctively banded caudal fin showing alternating red and yellow zones. The species represents one of the few Nothobranchius with a trans-border range in East Africa.
Husbandry follows standard Nothobranchius protocol: a dedicated species tank with peat substrate, soft to moderately hard water, and a diet of live and frozen invertebrates. Eggs require a diapause of 8–12 weeks stored in slightly moist peat. The species is moderately hardy and relatively forgiving of minor water parameter fluctuations.
N. neumanni is not commonly seen in the trade but appears occasionally at killifish society auctions and specialist killifish retailers. Its attractive caudal fin colouration makes it a worthwhile addition to any annual killifish collection.
Water: 20–26 °C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 3–12). Tank: 30 L species tank with peat substrate and a tight-fitting cover. Feeding: Live Artemia, Daphnia, frozen bloodworm, and micro worms daily. Breeding: Harvest peat monthly; store eggs in moist peat for 8–12 weeks. Compatibility: Species tank only; males will fight if housed together.
