About

The New Caledonia Freshwater Crab belonging to Bavayia represents one of the more obscure and geographically isolated freshwater crabs in the trade. New Caledonia's freshwater crab fauna is largely endemic, with species inhabiting clean montane forest streams on the island's rugged main island (Grande Terre) in conditions of excellent water quality, moderate temperature, and high oxygenation.

These crabs are closely associated with rocky stream habitats beneath rainforest canopy, where they inhabit crevices, under-boulder spaces, and stream margins. As with other freshwater crabs from island endemic lineages, they are direct developers: females brood eggs under the abdominal flap until fully formed miniature juveniles are released.

In captivity, a waterfall paludarium or high-flow rocky stream aquarium closely replicates their habitat. Water quality must be pristine — these species have no natural exposure to pollution and are sensitive to ammonia, nitrite, and organic waste accumulation. Advanced hobbyists seeking truly rare biotope species will find New Caledonian freshwater crabs an extraordinary and rewarding challenge.

Care Guide

Water: 20–25°C, pH 7.0–7.8, GH 5–15, KH 2–10; pristine quality; high oxygenation; waterfall flow recommended. Tank: minimum 50 L paludarium with waterfall or high-flow rocky stream section; boulders, moss, clean substrate. Feeding: omnivore — dried insects, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets, algae wafers; small portions; remove uneaten food. Breeding: direct developer; female broods eggs; miniature juveniles independent on hatching; cool stable conditions needed. Compatibility: one male to 1–2 females; do not mix with fish or other crab species; pristine water non-negotiable.
