Crenicichla nickeriensis
Also known as: Nickeriensis Pike Cichlid, Nickerie River Pike Cichlid
Origin: Nickerie River system, western Suriname
Crenicichla nickeriensis is a slim, moderately sized pike cichlid confined to the Nickerie River system of western Suriname, close to the border with Guyana. Like many Surinamese pike cichlids it inhabits clear, slightly acidic rivers over white sand and rocky substrates, sheltering among submerged logs and root tangles in the river shallows.
The species has a neatly defined dark mid-lateral stripe as its most prominent marking, running cleanly from eye to caudal base without interruption. The body is silver-olive with fine scaling and a well-proportioned build. This is not a brightly coloured species but its clean, elegant appearance appeals to collectors who appreciate subtlety in their aquarium fish.
In the aquarium C. nickeriensis settles well in a properly prepared 180 L soft-water setup. It feeds readily on frozen meaty foods and accepts pellets without difficulty. European aquarists interested in Suriname's Crenicichla diversity will find this a worthwhile and manageable representative species.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic (pH 5.5–7.0) at 24–28°C; tannins beneficial. Tank: 180 L with white sand substrate, driftwood, and leaf litter. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and cichlid pellets; settles quickly. Breeding: Cave spawner; standard Crenicichla protocol. Compatibility: Species pair preferred; Suriname biotope with large robust fish.
