Barbus nigeriensis
Also known as: Nigerian Barb, West African Silver Barb
Origin: West Africa (Nigeria)
Barbus nigeriensis is distributed through river systems of Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries, occupying a range of habitats from large rivers to smaller tributaries and floodplain lakes. It is a robust, moderately deep-bodied barb with silver-olive flanks and a somewhat streamlined profile. Although not as flamboyantly coloured as some barbs, its active schooling behaviour and hardiness make it a reliable and rewarding aquarium fish.
In the aquarium this species is adaptable and tolerates a range of water conditions, though it prefers neutral to slightly acidic water with moderate hardness. A well-filtered tank with good water movement, open swimming space, and planted margins suits it well. Schools of six or more display confident, purposeful schooling behaviour that dominates the mid-water of a large tank.
Feeding is uncomplicated: Barbus nigeriensis eagerly accepts flake, pellets, and frozen or live invertebrates. Its size and activity level mean it is best housed with other robust fish of similar size; it is not suitable for very small or delicate nano community setups.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate hardness (GH 5–18). Tank: 100 L minimum; good filtration, open swimming lanes, planted cover. Feeding: Omnivore; quality pellets, flake, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, occasional vegetables. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; females noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with other robust West African community fish of similar size.
