Apistogramma nijsseni
Origin: Peru (Ucayali drainage)
Apistogramma nijsseni, the Panda Cichlid, is one of the most visually dramatic dwarf cichlids available to hobbyists, with males displaying a bold panda-like black-and-white body pattern overlaid with a vivid yellow belly. Females undergo a remarkable transformation when spawning, turning strikingly lemon-yellow while aggressively guarding their territory and fry. Native to the blackwater streams of Peru's Ucayali drainage, it adapts well to moderately soft, slightly acidic water and is a rewarding intermediate species.
Provide a well-planted aquarium with abundant hiding places including caves, coconut shells, and leaf litter. Maintain soft, slightly acidic water with good filtration. Feed live and frozen foods: bloodworm, daphnia, artemia. House as a pair; females become intensely territorial when spawning.
