Heterotis niloticus
Also known as: Nile Arowana, African Arowana, Heterotis
Origin: Africa
Heterotis niloticus is distributed across the Nile, Niger, Volta, Chad, and Senegal basins of West and Central Africa. It is the only osteoglossid that filter-feeds rather than predating, using a unique spiral-valve organ associated with its second gill arch to concentrate phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fine organic particles from the water column. Despite this, it accepts meaty foods and high-quality pellets in captivity. It is an obligate air-breather and must have unobstructed surface access. Unlike other arowanas it is relatively peaceful and can be housed with large companions. Can exceed 90cm and requires a very large aquarium.
Water: 25-30°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard; surface access for air breathing mandatory. Tank: Minimum 1500L; moderate flow; some surface vegetation acceptable; sturdy lid required. Feeding: Omnivore; sinking pellets, earthworms, brine shrimp, spirulina tablets, blanched greens. Breeding: Builds nest from vegetation; rarely bred in captivity; requires very large space. Compatibility: Peaceful with large fish; may inadvertently ingest very small fish while filter feeding.
