About

Nimbochromis livingstonii 'Kaligono' is the specific locality collection of Livingston's Cichlid sourced from the Kaligono area of Lake Malawi. This large, laterally compressed predator is famous for its unique hunting strategy: it lies motionless on its side on the substrate, mimicking a dead or dying fish to attract curious smaller cichlids, then lunges to capture them with explosive speed.

The Kaligono form is notable among collectors for its larger blotch pattern and the intense electric blue-green iridescence males develop across the face and anterior body during breeding condition. Females are cryptically patterned in brown and white blotches, providing excellent camouflage. Both sexes can grow impressively large, making a 400 L minimum tank a practical necessity.

This species is a maternal mouthbrooder and one of the easiest large Malawi predators to breed in captivity. Feed meaty foods generously and maintain pristine water conditions. Best kept with other large Haps and Peacocks of comparable size; will consume any fish small enough to fit in its mouth.

Care Guide

Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; high oxygenation and efficient filtration required for a large predatory species. Tank: 400 L minimum with open sandy floor for the characteristic 'playing dead' behavior; minimal rockwork; strong water flow. Feeding: Carnivore pellets, large krill, silversides, and earthworms; feed every other day to avoid obesity in this ambush predator. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold 3–4 weeks; separate female before release or move to a dedicated nursery tank. Compatibility: Keep with large non-predatory Haps and Peacocks; will eat fish smaller than half its own body length; avoid small utaka.
