Nimbochromis polystigma
Also known as: Polystigma Cichlid, Spotted Sleeper Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi
Nimbochromis polystigma is the most heavily spotted of the Nimbochromis species, wearing a pattern of large brown-and-cream blotches across the body that aids camouflage during ambush hunts. Males in prime breeding condition develop a breathtaking transformation — the head and anterior body flush with blue-green metallic iridescence while the spotted pattern is partially retained, creating one of the most dramatic color contrasts in the genus.
This species inhabits intermediate zones between rocky and sandy habitats and in the aquarium appreciates a mix of open sand with some rocky structure. Like other Nimbochromis, it is a patient ambush predator that sits motionless before striking prey at high speed. It is best kept with large Haps and Peacocks that cannot be easily swallowed.
Polystigma is considered slightly more aggressive than venustus, particularly toward similarly patterned fish. Provide ample space and ensure tank mates are of comparable size. Maternal mouthbrooder producing broods of 20–50 fry.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; high oxygenation and efficient filtration essential. Tank: 400 L minimum; sandy substrate with rocky outcrops; keep only one male of this species per tank. Feeding: Carnivore pellets, large krill, silversides; feed every other day to maintain healthy body weight without overfeeding. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold ~3 weeks; provide a separate breeding or nursery tank for best fry survival rates. Compatibility: Best with large Haps; avoid mbuna, small utaka, and any fish small enough to be eaten.
