Corydoras niteroi
Also known as: Niteroi Cory, Niterói Cory
Origin: Brazil (Rio de Janeiro state, Atlantic drainages)
Corydoras niteroi originates from the coastal river systems of Rio de Janeiro state in southeastern Brazil — a relatively small and geographically isolated range compared to most of its Amazonian relatives. It is named after the city of Niterói, reflecting its coastal Atlantic Forest drainage origin. The body is brownish with irregular dark blotches and a greenish-golden iridescence that becomes particularly vibrant under angled lighting.
Because it comes from rivers influenced by seasonal flooding and a subtropical climate, C. niteroi can tolerate slightly harder and more alkaline water than many Amazon cories, though it prefers slightly soft to moderately hard conditions. It is rarely seen in the mainstream trade but appears periodically through Brazilian specialist exporters.
Care is straightforward for an intermediate keeper: clean water, fine substrate, a varied diet, and a stable group of six or more. The species is peaceful and adaptable, and its coastal-Atlantic origin makes it an interesting choice for a Brazilian Atlantic Forest biotope aquarium alongside other southeastern Brazilian endemics.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 22–26°C; tolerates a range typical of coastal Atlantic drainage. Tank: 80 L with fine sand, driftwood, and plant cover; a biotope setup with endemic Brazilian plants is ideal. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, Daphnia, and Tubifex; twice daily feeding preferred. Breeding: Rarely achieved in captivity; likely follows typical cory protocol with cool water change trigger. Compatibility: Peaceful with all community fish; excellent in southeastern Brazilian biotope setups.
