Astacus astacus
Also known as: Noble Crayfish, European Broad-clawed Crayfish
Origin: Europe
Astacus astacus, the Noble or European Broad-clawed Crayfish, is the largest native crayfish species in Europe and has deep cultural significance across Scandinavia and Central Europe, where crayfish parties (kräftskiva in Swedish) are a summer tradition. It is a powerfully built species with broad chelae and rich brown-olive to dark green coloration, making it an impressive display animal.
Native to clean, cool lakes and rivers of Central and Northern Europe, A. astacus requires pristine water quality and cold temperatures. It is highly susceptible to crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci) and must never be housed with or in water that has contacted North American crayfish species. This species is legally protected in many European countries.
Despite its demanding requirements, dedicated keepers can successfully maintain A. astacus in well-chilled, heavily filtered aquaria. It grows slowly and lives for many years, rewarding patient keepers with a magnificent long-term display specimen.
Water: 5–20°C, pH 7.0–8.5, GH 10–25, KH 5–15; clean, cool, hard water critical; never above 22°C. Tank: minimum 150 L, cobble and slate caves, strong filtration and aeration; tight escape-proof lid. Feeding: omnivore — sinking pellets, leaf litter, blanched vegetables, invertebrate protein. Breeding: breeds in autumn; small clutch brooded over winter; juveniles hatch spring. Compatibility: keep alone; legally protected in many EU countries — verify regulations.
