Ctenops nobilis
Also known as: Noble Gourami, Frail Gourami
Origin: South Asia
Ctenops nobilis is a fragile and rarely kept mouthbrooding gourami native to the wetlands and slow rivers of eastern India and Bangladesh. Its iridescent scales and unique mouthbrooding reproductive strategy make it a fascinating subject for the specialist aquarist. It requires soft, slightly acidic water and a quiet, well-planted environment.
Water: temp 24–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft and slightly acidic. Tank: minimum 80L; heavily planted and quiet; avoid turbulent flow. Feeding: carnivore — live and frozen invertebrates; may refuse dry foods initially. Behaviour: peaceful and shy; males mouthbrood eggs and fry. Compatibility: suitable with small, gentle fish; avoid boisterous or nippy tankmates.
