Apistogramma norberti
Also known as: Norbert's Apisto, Norberti Dwarf Cichlid, Bold-stripe Apistogramma
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma norberti is a sharply patterned Peruvian species whose most distinctive feature is a bold, continuous black lateral stripe extending from the eye to the caudal peduncle, set against a vivid yellow-green body that becomes even more intense in soft, acidic conditions. It was described relatively recently and remains sought after by Apistogramma enthusiasts.
The species inhabits soft, acidic forest streams in the Peruvian Amazon and requires water quality reflecting those origins to maintain optimal health and coloration. In the aquarium, males are moderately territorial and will stake out a cave territory but are generally manageable with appropriate tankmates.
A. norberti is considered an intermediate-level species — not as demanding as the extreme blackwater specialists, but requiring more attention to water chemistry than the hardier Colombian forms.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 24–28°C. Tank: 60 L with caves, driftwood, and plant coverage. Feeding: Varied diet of live/frozen invertebrates and quality pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards; moderately straightforward for an intermediate keeper. Compatibility: Small peaceful tetras, pencilfish, Corydoras pygmaeus.
