Platynematichthys notatus
Also known as: Notatus Pimelodid, Saddle Catfish
Origin: Amazon basin
Platynematichthys notatus is a relatively obscure Amazonian pimelodid distinguished by prominent dark saddle markings across the dorsal surface and upper flanks, and by maxillary barbels that in young fish can approach half the total body length. It inhabits large river channels throughout the Amazon basin.
In the aquarium it is an active predator that requires a large, well-maintained tank with excellent filtration. Like most pimelodids, the long barbels are sensitive to injury and sharp substrate or décor must be avoided. It adapts well to meaty prepared foods once settled.
The Notatus Pimelodid is infrequently imported and represents a genuine oddity for collectors of large South American catfish. It is less extreme in size demands than the true giants and is a manageable species for experienced large-catfish keepers.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; high water quality. Tank: Minimum 600L; smooth substrate and décor to protect barbels; strong filtration. Feeding: Carnivore; prawns, fish fillets, large sinking pellets; feeds confidently. Breeding: No captive breeding documented. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; keep with large robust South American species.
