Nyassachromis prostoma
Also known as: Prostoma Hap, Protruding-jaw Hap
Origin: Lake Malawi
Nyassachromis prostoma is a distinctive haplochromine with a notably protruding upper jaw — an unusual feature within Lake Malawi's cichlid fauna that facilitates scraping algae-associated invertebrates from rocky and sandy surfaces. This jaw structure gives the fish a somewhat unusual profile compared to typical Haps but makes it a fascinating study in adaptive specialization.
Males in breeding condition are attractively colored in blue-green metallic tones with subtle darker patterning. The species is infrequently available in the trade, making it a desirable find for collectors seeking unusual and scientifically interesting Malawi cichlids. Care is straightforward for an experienced Malawi keeper.
Maternal mouthbrooder. Females are plain grey-silver. Moderately territorial; keep one male per tank. Best maintained with large enough tankmates to avoid predation risk. An intriguing and rewarding specialist species for the dedicated Malawi collector.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; stable alkaline conditions; moderate filtration. Tank: 300 L minimum; mix of rocky and sandy areas; some algae growth on rocks encouraged to mimic natural feeding. Feeding: Omnivore pellets, spirulina wafers, frozen mysis; supplement with vegetable matter; feed twice daily. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold ~3 weeks; isolate female in nursery tank if needed. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; keep with similarly sized Haps and Peacocks; avoid very small fish.
