Pundamilia nyererei
Also known as: Nyererei, Flameback Cichlid, Ruti Island Cichlid
Origin: East Africa (Lake Victoria)
Pundamilia nyererei is one of the most vividly colored cichlids from the greatly imperiled Lake Victoria, where thousands of endemic cichlid species have been devastated by Nile Perch introductions and habitat degradation. Males display a spectacular combination of red-orange upperparts and brilliant blue-green flanks, creating a striking contrast that makes them highly attractive in the aquarium. Females are duller, with cryptic brownish-yellow coloration. The Nyererei Cichlid is endemic to rocky islands in the southern portion of Lake Victoria, particularly Ruti Island, where it inhabits rocky shorelines and feeds on invertebrates, algae, and detritus. In captivity, the Nyererei is one of the hardier and more forgiving Victorian cichlids, adapting to slightly less extreme water parameters than Malawi or Tanganyika species. Like all Victoria cichlids, it is a maternal mouthbrooder. Males can be aggressive toward females during courtship, so maintaining a harem ratio of one male to several females is recommended. Keeping this species not only provides aquarists with an exceptional display fish but also supports the conservation of an imperiled lineage through captive populations. Multiple geographical color forms exist among Pundamilia nyererei populations.
Tank Setup A 150-liter aquarium is recommended for a small harem. Create a mix of rocky zones with caves and open sandy areas. This species inhabits transitional rocky environments in the wild. Coral sand substrate helps buffer water to appropriate hardness.
Water Parameters Maintain pH 7.5–8.5, temperature 22–26°C, and moderately hard water. Lake Victoria water is less extreme than Malawi or Tanganyika, but the fish still requires alkaline, hard water. Perform 20–30% weekly water changes.
Filtration A reliable canister or internal filter providing good biological filtration is adequate. Monitor water quality closely, especially when first establishing a colony. Victorian cichlids are susceptible to Malawi bloat-like conditions under poor water quality.
Diet Feed a varied omnivore diet: cichlid pellets, spirulina flake, frozen brine shrimp, mysis, and daphnia. Avoid exclusively high-protein diets. Include vegetable matter regularly. Feed twice daily in moderate portions.
Tankmates Best kept with other Victorian haplochromines in a Lake Victoria biotope setup. Can be mixed with other peaceful to semi-aggressive Victorians. Avoid keeping with mbuna or particularly aggressive species. Do not house with fish that cannot defend themselves.
Breeding Mothers hold 10–30 eggs for approximately 3 weeks. Females may refuse food during this period. Move brooding females to a quiet tank to reduce stress. Fry are released fully mobile and can be fed crushed flake and baby brine shrimp. Males re-spawn readily once females recover.
