Pundamilia nyererei
Also known as: Mwanza Gulf Nyererei, Nyererei Cichlid, Victorian Nyererei
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Pundamilia nyererei 'Mwanza Gulf' is collected from the rocky shorelines of the Mwanza Gulf in Tanzania, the southern arm of Lake Victoria. This locality is one of the most productive collection points for Victorian cichlids and has supplied the hobby with nyererei for decades. Males develop a clean red-orange body colouration with blue reflections on the head, though the intensity may be slightly less extreme than in island-endemic forms such as Makobe or Python.
The Mwanza Gulf form is generally considered a good entry point for aquarists new to Victorian haplochromines. It is slightly more tolerant of suboptimal conditions than some rarer variants and breeds freely in captivity, making it an ideal species for those wishing to establish a self-sustaining Victorian colony.
Regular partial water changes, a varied diet, and adequate rockwork are the foundations of successful nyererei keeping. This species is an excellent ambassador for the critically threatened Lake Victoria cichlid fauna.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, moderately hard; weekly 25% changes essential. Tank: 150L minimum; rocky layout with caves, overhangs, and open sandy corridors. Feeding: Quality pellets, spirulina flakes, frozen foods; feed 2-3 times daily in small amounts. Breeding: Easy maternal mouthbrooder; females brood for 3 weeks; isolate for safety. Compatibility: Best in Victorian-only aquariums; avoid mixing locality forms.
