Pundamilia nyererei
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Pundamilia nyererei is among the most colourful haplochromine cichlids from Lake Victoria. Males display an extraordinary red-to-orange lateral blaze, yellow belly, and blue-green dorsal against a dark body. Females are cryptically brownish. A maternal mouthbrooder; the species is listed as Vulnerable due to Nile Perch predation and eutrophication in the lake. Most available specimens are captive-bred, providing valuable insurance populations. Best kept in a species tank or with robust Victorian haps.
Harem setup: one male to 3+ females. Hard alkaline water (pH 7.5–8.5, GH 10–20). Temperature 24–27 °C. Feed cichlid pellets, spirulina flakes, frozen brine shrimp. Males may harass females; provide sight breaks. 120 L minimum.
