Pundamilia nyererei
Also known as: Python Island Nyererei, Nyererei Cichlid
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Pundamilia nyererei 'Python Island' is collected from Python Island in Lake Victoria's Speke Gulf, Tanzania. Males of this locality variant develop exceptionally deep red-orange flanks with a contrasting dark dorsal stripe running from the snout to the caudal peduncle, a feature that distinguishes this form from other nyererei localities. The overall body is more saturated than many other variants, making it especially desirable among Victorian cichlid collectors.
Behaviourally, Python Island nyererei are as demanding as other locality forms — males are highly territorial and will harass tankmates relentlessly unless the aquarium is well structured with sight breaks and multiple cave territories. Females are maternal mouthbrooders that can be encouraged to breed readily once established in a species-only setup.
This form thrives on a varied diet combining quality cichlid pellets, spirulina, and frozen invertebrate foods. Consistent water quality and hard, alkaline conditions mirroring Lake Victoria are essential to maintaining colour intensity and health.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, moderately hard alkaline water; weekly water changes of 25%. Tank: 150L minimum; ample rockwork with defined territories and open sand zones. Feeding: Cichlid pellets, spirulina, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter regularly. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; separate females post-release to protect fry. Compatibility: Victorian species tank; one dominant male; avoid aggressive mbuna mixes.
