Haplochromis nyererei
Also known as: Nyererei Victorian, Nyererei Haplochromis
Origin: Lake Victoria, Africa
Haplochromis nyererei is one of the most recognisable Victorian cichlids in the hobby, with males displaying a striking tricolour combination of red-orange dorsum, golden-yellow flanks, and blue head. It is a maternal mouthbrooder from the rocky areas around Mwanza Gulf in Lake Victoria and is considered endangered in its natural habitat.
Water: 23-26°C, pH 7.5-8.5, moderately hard alkaline water; very clean water maintained with regular changes. Tank: Minimum 150L; rocky shoreline with caves and open sandy areas for display. Feeding: Quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-based foods, and occasional frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Males intensely territorial toward rivals; harem setup essential; females need refuge during mouthbrooding. Compatibility: Victorian cichlid community; best with other rocky Victorian haplochromines.
