Pao obscurus
Also known as: Obscure Puffer
Origin: Mekong River, Southeast Asia
Pao obscurus is a seldom-seen freshwater puffer from the Mekong River system with a cryptic brown-olive pattern that renders it nearly invisible against sandy and muddy substrates. Its infrequent availability in the trade makes it a prize for serious puffer enthusiasts. Care requirements follow the standard Pao template of a species-only setup with ample hard-shelled invertebrate prey.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; stable, clean conditions with good filtration. Tank: Minimum 100 L; sandy substrate, driftwood roots, and minimal planting. Feeding: Snails, mussels, clams, cockles, and frozen invertebrates; beak maintenance is critical. Behaviour: Solitary and territorial; will attack any conspecific or other puffer — individual housing. Compatibility: Species-only; dedicated solo aquarium essential.
