Calydontichthys obtusirostris
Also known as: Obtusirostris Catfish, Blunt-nosed Pimelodid
Origin: South America
Calydontichthys obtusirostris is a member of a small genus characterised by an unusually blunt, rounded rostrum that contrasts markedly with the pointed snouts of most pimelodids. Its mottled colouration of brown and grey provides camouflage among leaf litter and submerged wood in its native river habitats.
In the aquarium this is a moderately sized, adaptable catfish that accepts a variety of meaty sinking foods. It is not among the most aggressive pimelodids and can be housed with medium-large robust South American species. It prefers subdued lighting and hiding spots.
Calydontichthys obtusirostris is very rarely imported and is primarily of interest to hobbyists who enjoy collecting unusual or obscure South American catfish. Basic care requirements follow other medium pimelodids.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; clean, stable conditions. Tank: Minimum 350L; hiding spots, subdued lighting, sandy substrate. Feeding: Omnivore; sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, whole prawns. Breeding: No captive breeding documented. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; avoid very small fish.
