Betta ocellata
Origin: Sabah, East Kalimantan (Borneo)
Betta ocellata is a large mouthbrooding wild betta from the fast-flowing rivers and streams of Sabah and East Kalimantan on Borneo, where it hunts insects and small invertebrates. It takes its name from the distinctive ocellus (eye-spot) marking near the tail base, and males display attractive gold-green iridescent body scales. Unlike most popular bettas, it requires well-filtered, well-oxygenated water with moderate current and cooler temperatures than tropical community tanks.
Provide a mature, well-filtered aquarium with moderate to good water flow. Maintain cooler, well-oxygenated water. Feed live and frozen invertebrates: crickets, mealworms, frozen bloodworm, daphnia. Do not disturb the male during mouthbrooding (2–3 weeks). Best kept as a pair in a species-specific setup.
