Gastromyzon ocellatus
Origin: Borneo (Sarawak, Malaysia)
Gastromyzon ocellatus is a visually stunning hillstream loach from the fast-flowing mountain rivers of Sarawak, Borneo, decorated with distinctive eye-like ocelli across its dorsal surface—a pattern believed to deter predators. A highly specialized biofilm and algae grazer, it requires highly oxygenated, cool water with significant directional current over smooth rock surfaces. A rewarding but demanding species for the experienced hobbyist committed to recreating its specialized habitat.
Provide a mature aquarium with powerheads creating strong, directional flow over smooth rocks. Maintain high dissolved oxygen with surface agitation and cooler water. Allow biofilm to develop on rocks before introduction. Feed with algae wafers, spirulina tabs, and blanched vegetables. Sensitive to water quality decline.
