Takifugu ocellatus
Also known as: Ocellated Puffer, Chinese Puffer
Origin: China, Japan, Korea (coastal estuaries)
Takifugu ocellatus occurs in coastal rivers, estuaries, and intertidal zones from China through Korea and Japan. It is one of the Takifugu 'fugu' species and is accordingly highly toxic if ingested; no aquarium specimens should ever be consumed. It requires brackish to full marine conditions as an adult and is a robust, active swimmer with strong territorial instincts.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 7.0–8.5, SG 1.005–1.020; adults require full brackish to near-marine salinity. Tank: Minimum 150 L; open substrate, minimal planting, and good water movement. Feeding: Snails, clams, mussels, and frozen shellfish; hard-shelled foods essential. Behaviour: Aggressive and territorial; strong swimmer — species-only housing required. Compatibility: Species-only; contains tetrodotoxin — never handle without care or attempt to eat.
