Crenicichla oligospila
Also known as: Oligospila Pike Cichlid, Few-spotted Pike Cichlid, Essequibo Pike Cichlid
Origin: Marowijne and Essequibo drainages, Suriname/Guyana
Crenicichla oligospila is a gracefully understated pike cichlid from the Marowijne and Essequibo river systems of Suriname and Guyana. The species name means 'few spots' — unlike many Crenicichla with profuse lateral spotting, C. oligospila carries only a sparse scattering of discrete dark markings against a clean pale silver-grey body, giving it a minimalist elegance.
It inhabits clear-to-lightly-tannin-stained rivers over sandy and rocky substrates in the Guiana Shield lowlands. In captivity, soft to slightly hard water at 24–28°C keeps this species in good health. It is not a demanding species by Crenicichla standards and settles into aquarium life relatively readily, making it a worthwhile choice for aquarists stepping into Guiana Shield pike cichlids.
At 18 cm C. oligospila is a compact and manageable predator for a 180 L species tank. Feeding on frozen carnivore foods poses no problems, and pellets are usually accepted within a few weeks. A bonded pair can be a productive breeding project.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0 at 24–28°C; soft to moderately hard; good water quality important. Tank: 180 L with sandy substrate, driftwood, and defined cave structures. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and pellets; settles into feeding routine quickly. Breeding: Cave spawner; biparental care; standard conditioning protocol. Compatibility: Guiana Shield biotope; keep with large robust fish only.
