Ophthalmotilapia heterodonta

Ophthalmotilapia heterodonta is a less frequently encountered member of the genus, distinguished by its heterogeneous dentition adapted for scraping aufwuchs from rocky surfaces. Like other Ophthalmotilapia, breeding males develop spectacular elongated pelvic fins tipped with egg-spot mimics used to trigger spawning in females.

This species occupies rocky-shore to transitional habitats in Lake Tanganyika. Males display a soft blue-grey nuptial colouration with its own understated elegance. Females are smaller and plain, incubating the clutch as sole mouthbrooders.

O. heterodonta is recommended for intermediate to advanced Tanganyika hobbyists who appreciate behavioural complexity. Its scraping feeding behaviour, trailing fin display, and egg-spot spawning mechanism provide fascinating daily observational interest in a well-designed community aquarium.

Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–18, KH 8–16; clean alkaline water; weekly water changes of 25%. Tank: 300 L minimum; rocky zone with algae growth; open midwater; gentle current. Feeding: Spirulina flake and pellets; algae-based foods replicate wild aufwuchs diet; supplement with frozen Mysis. Breeding: Female mouthbrooder; egg-spot pelvic fin display triggers spawning; female holds 20–40 fry for 4 weeks. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; combine with Xenotilapia, Cyprichromis, Enantiopus, and calm rocky-shore species.
