Ophthalmotilapia ventralis is a sexually dimorphic mouthbrooding cichlid from the intermediate rocky zone of Lake Tanganyika. Dominant males develop spectacular elongated ventral fin filaments with bright orange or yellow egg-spot tips, used in intricate mating displays. Females mouthbrood the eggs and fry. Available in multiple locality colour morphs.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water. Tank: 200L+; sandy substrate with scattered rocks; open water for male display. Feeding: Omnivore — spirulina-based flake as staple; supplement with small frozen invertebrates. Behaviour: Dominant male defends spawning territory; females mouthbrood for 3-4 weeks; keep one male per tank. Compatibility: Xenotilapia species, Cyathopharynx furcifer, Julidochromis in rocky areas.
