Betta splendens
Also known as: Orange Betta, Tangerine Betta, Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Orange bettas sit in the warmer end of the betta colour spectrum, and true deep-orange specimens are produced through careful line breeding. The colouration ranges from a light tangerine to a deep burnt-orange depending on the genetics. Colour is most vivid when the fish is in prime health and well-fed.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — carotenoid-rich foods enhance the orange pigment. Tank: minimum 20L, planted; white or light substrate creates a complementary backdrop. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets with colour-enhancing ingredients, frozen bloodworm; twice daily. Behaviour: males aggressive to own species — one per tank. Compatibility: peaceful community tanks; orange colouration brightens any planted setup.
