About

Corydoras sp. CW010 — the Orange Laser Corydoras — is an undescribed corydoras species from the Peruvian Amazon, known in the hobby under its collection number designation. Like several attractive undescribed corydoras species, it has become established in the aquarium trade and in the collections of cory enthusiasts despite lacking a formal scientific name.

The 'laser' common name refers to the vivid, highly reflective orange to orange-yellow horizontal stripe that runs from behind the gill plate to the caudal peduncle — the stripe is so intense and reflective it resembles a laser beam of orange light passing through the aquarium. This stripe is set against a dark, olive-brown to near-black body, creating striking contrast.

Care requirements and behavior are typical of the Corydoras genus: peaceful, social bottom-dwellers that forage along the substrate using sensitive barbels, breathe atmospheric air periodically by surfacing, and thrive in groups. They produce mild toxic secretions when severely stressed — a defense mechanism common to the Corydoras genus.

Orange Laser Corydoras are prized by cory enthusiasts for their standout coloration within the genus and command premium prices compared to common species like C. aeneus or C. paleatus.

Care Guide

Orange Laser Corydoras require soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water: pH 6.0–7.5, hardness 2–12 dGH, and temperatures 22–26°C. As an Amazon species, slightly softer, slightly acidic water is preferred. They are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite — pristine water quality is important.

A minimum 80-liter aquarium with fine sand substrate is ideal — coarse gravel or sharp substrate damages sensitive barbels over time. Provide driftwood, smooth rocks, fine-leaved plants, and ample hiding spots. Dense planting around tank periphery with clear substrate in central areas suits their foraging behavior.

Feed quality sinking foods: corydoras pellets, algae wafers, and supplemental frozen or live bloodworms, tubifex, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Feed in the evening when corydoras are most active. Ensure food reaches the bottom past mid-water feeders.

Orange Laser Corydoras are peaceful with all community species. Ideal companions include small to medium tetras, rasboras, livebearers, small gouramis, and small cichlids. Keep in groups of at least 6 — solitary individuals become stressed and reclusive.

Weekly water changes of 25–30% with temperature-matched water maintain the water quality this species requires. Monitor barbel integrity as a water quality indicator.
