Symphysodon aequifasciatus var.
Also known as: Orange Peel Discus, Orange Discus
Origin: Captive bred (originally Southeast Asian hatcheries)
The Orange Peel Discus is a vibrant domestic strain that fills the colour gap between yellow and red discus varieties. The smooth, unbroken orange pigmentation of a well-bred specimen — a warm, saturated hue reminiscent of fresh citrus — is immediately eye-catching and provides excellent contrast in a mixed discus display.
Achieving and sustaining the orange tone requires a carotenoid-rich diet alongside the standard soft, warm, acidic water conditions all discus need. Without adequate dietary colour support, the orange fades toward a washed-out yellow.
Orange Peel Discus are sociable and peaceful, integrating easily into groups of other domestic strains. Their warm tones complement the cooler blues, greens, and whites found in other popular strains, making them a valuable component of a visually balanced multi-strain display aquarium.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft (1-8 dGH), KH 0-4; regular 25-30% water changes weekly. Tank: Minimum 250 L, dark substrate enhances orange colouration, driftwood and broad-leaf plants for cover. Feeding: Carotenoid-enriched pellets, beefheart, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp enriched with spirulina. Breeding: Open spawner; reliable breeder in stable conditions; both parents tend eggs and fry. Compatibility: Peaceful with other discus, cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, and small Corydoras.
