Crenicara punctulata
Also known as: Original Checkerboard Cichlid, Checkerboard Cichlid, Punctulata Cichlid
Origin: South America
Crenicara punctulata is a seldom-kept species from the central Amazon basin and represents the original fish to be called the 'checkerboard cichlid' in the hobby. Its elongated body is patterned with a row of prominent lateral spots that give it a distinctly elegant appearance. It prefers soft, slightly acidic water and a well-decorated aquarium with plenty of hiding places.
Water: 24-29°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to moderately soft (GH 2-8). Tank: 80L minimum, sand substrate, driftwood, caves, moderate planting. Feeding: omnivore — live/frozen Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm; cichlid micro-pellets. Behaviour: peaceful; mildly territorial during spawning; pairs or small groups. Compatibility: peaceful community tank with medium tetras and Corydoras.
