Cichla orinocensis
Also known as: Orinocensis Peacock Bass, Orinoco Peacock Bass, Mariposa Tucunaré
Origin: Venezuela, Colombia (Orinoco)
Cichla orinocensis is the premier Peacock Bass of the Orinoco and Casiquiare systems, and one of the most recognisable species in the genus. Its three prominent dark vertical bars contrast sharply with gold flank colouration, and adults develop intense yellow pigmentation across the head and anterior body during spawning condition. It has long been a prized species for large cichlid enthusiasts.
As an Orinoco species it is accustomed to soft, slightly acidic water with good flow — conditions that should be replicated as closely as possible in captivity. However, it is one of the more adaptable Cichla and tolerates moderate water hardness better than strict blackwater species. The key requirements are space, excellent filtration, and high water quality.
Cichla orinocensis breeds readily in large captive setups compared to some of its congeners. Pairs spawn on flat rocks or substrate and share intense parental care duties. Juveniles are attractively patterned and grow rapidly on a varied carnivore diet.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 5.5-7.2, soft to moderately hard (2-12 dGH); good flow and water quality essential. Tank: Minimum 800L; open swimming space, flat rocks, powerful biological and mechanical filtration. Feeding: Large carnivore pellets, frozen whole fish, prawn, earthworm; wean from live fish as juveniles. Breeding: Open substrate spawner on flat rock; both parents defend territory and fry aggressively. Compatibility: Only with fish too large to eat; giant catfish and other large robust cichlids.
