Satanoperca sp. 'Orinoco'
Also known as: Orinoco Eartheater, Orinoco Satanoperca
Origin: Venezuela (Orinoco)
Satanoperca sp. 'Orinoco' represents an undescribed species from Venezuelan Orinoco tributaries that has circulated in the hobby under various trade names. It displays a prominent black caudal peduncle spot and an overall blue-green iridescent sheen that intensifies with age and condition. Its undescribed status adds collector intrigue, as taxonomic work may eventually elevate it to full species status.
This fish requires the same blackwater conditions as other Orinoco Satanoperca: soft, warm, acidic water with botanical additions. It is moderately demanding and best suited to experienced hobbyists who understand and can maintain these parameters consistently. Deep fine sand and low-nitrate water are non-negotiable.
Peaceful and graceful, this species makes an excellent centrepiece in a biotope aquarium recreating Venezuelan Orinoco tributaries. Its fascinating substrate-sifting behaviour and cooperative mouthbrooding provide endless interest for the dedicated observer.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 5.0-6.8, soft (0-5 dGH); blackwater conditions strongly recommended. Tank: Minimum 300L; fine sand, heavy driftwood and leaf litter, dim lighting; botanical additions beneficial. Feeding: Sinking eartheater pellets, frozen bloodworm, live daphnia and Artemia, occasional blackworm. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; undescribed status means limited published breeding data; standard protocol applies. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other Orinoco species — tetras, pencilfish, corydoras, and gentle cichlids.
