Colossoma macropomum
Also known as: Ornamental Pacu, Pacu, Tambaqui
Origin: South America (Amazon and Orinoco basins)
Colossoma macropomum relatives used as ornamental Pacu are members of the Serrasalmidae family and are among the largest characins kept in aquariums. Their deep, disc-like silver body with dark markings makes them visually impressive, but they can grow very large and require enormous aquariums or pond systems to thrive long-term. A responsible purchase only for keepers with the facilities to accommodate their full adult size.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 500 L+ minimum as adults; very strong filtration; avoid plants and decorations that can be destroyed. Feeding: Primarily herbivorous — fruits, vegetables, soaked pellets, nuts; supplement with protein. Behaviour: Generally peaceful despite size; can be kept in groups; may consume plants and decor. Compatibility: Only other very large robust fish such as large catfish and cichlids in huge systems.
