Polypterus ornatipinnis is a large and visually spectacular bichir from Central and East African rivers, capable of reaching 60cm in captivity. Its intricate marble-like pattern remains vivid throughout its life and becomes even more pronounced on mature specimens. Requires spacious, well-filtered housing.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: Minimum 300L, large caves and root tangles for hiding, tight lid essential at all times. Feeding: Carnivore; large earthworms, prawns, frozen fish flesh, quality sinking pellets. Behaviour: Generally calm but will consume any fish small enough to fit in its mouth. Compatibility: House with large, robust fish such as large cichlids, other bichirs, or big catfish.
