Polypterus ornatipinnis
Origin: Congo basin, East Africa
Polypterus ornatipinnis, the Ornate Bichir, is arguably the most beautiful of all bichir species — its body is covered in a bold, intricate cream-and-black reticulated pattern that resembles a batik design. Growing to 60 cm, it needs a large tank and a secure lid. Like all bichirs it breathes air via a primitive lung and is a nocturnal predator that stalks small prey. A true conversation piece for large fish enthusiasts. As with all bichirs, it is remarkably tolerant of a range of water conditions.
200+ L minimum; 400+ L for adults. Secure lid essential. Sandy substrate. Temperature 24–28 °C. Feed sinking meaty pellets, frozen fish pieces, shrimp, and earthworms. Will consume any fish smaller than itself. Peaceful with large, robust tankmates.
