Polypterus ornatipinnis
Origin: Congo River basin and East Africa
The Ornate Bichir is widely regarded as the most visually spectacular member of its genus, featuring a stunning pattern of interconnected black reticulations over a vivid yellow-gold base color that covers both the body and all fin surfaces. Native to the Congo River basin and several East African lakes, it is a moderately large and robust polypterid well suited to large aquariums with other robust fish. Its striking appearance and prehistoric lineage spanning over 96 million years make it a prized centerpiece species.
Provide a large aquarium with a tight-fitting lid—bichirs are escape artists and will push through any gap. Maintain clean water with good filtration. Feed meaty foods: frozen shrimp, earthworms, raw fish, and quality carnivore pellets. House with fish too large to swallow but not aggressive enough to injure it.
