Chitala blanci
Also known as: Ornate Featherback, Royal Knifefish, Blanci Featherback
Origin: Southeast Asia
Chitala blanci is one of the lesser-known Notopteridae species, found in the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins of mainland Southeast Asia. Its body is covered with a fine reticulated pattern of dark markings over a silver-white background, more intricate than the bold eyespots of the Clown Featherback. Like all Chitala species it is nocturnal, uses a modified swim bladder to breathe air in oxygen-depleted conditions, and propels itself via its long undulating anal fin. Rarely imported; specimens tend to command premium prices. Requires excellent aeration, large cave structures, and a very spacious aquarium at adult size.
Water: 24-30°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard; well-oxygenated water preferred. Tank: Minimum 1000L; very tall aquarium for adult hump; large driftwood caves; dim lighting. Feeding: Carnivore; whole fish, prawns, earthworms, mussels; train onto large sinking pellets. Breeding: Egg-layer with paternal egg guarding on flat substrate; not practical in home aquaria. Compatibility: Predatory toward small fish; suitable with large peaceful or semi-aggressive species.
