Sewellia ornata
Also known as: Ornate Hillstream Loach, Spotted Hillstream Loach
Origin: Vietnam
Sewellia ornata is found in the fast-moving, well-oxygenated hill streams of central Vietnam, where its ornate spotted pattern blends perfectly with the sunlit mosaic of pebbles and algae-coated bedrock. Its ventral profile is almost completely flat, with broad pectoral and pelvic fins acting as a hydrodynamic suction surface that keeps it glued to rocks even in violent current.
In aquaria, S. ornata behaves similarly to S. lineolata but tends to be slightly shier at first, taking a week or two to begin foraging openly. Once settled, it grazes almost continuously throughout the day, making it highly effective at controlling diatoms and hair algae. It is best kept in groups in a dedicated hillstream biotope with smooth stones, minimal silting, and powerful filtration.
Males develop a more pronounced rostral lobe and display vibrant patterning during spawning condition. The species is intolerant of organic waste build-up and any drop in dissolved oxygen, so robust mechanical filtration and weekly 30–40% water changes are strongly recommended.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15, KH 2–8; maintain high dissolved oxygen with powerful flow and vigorous surface movement. Tank: Minimum 80 L with smooth river pebbles, flat slate pieces, and minimal fine substrate to prevent silt accumulation. Feeding: Grazes biofilm continuously; supplement with spirulina wafers, algae discs, and blanched vegetables once or twice weekly. Breeding: Pairs deposit eggs under flat stones; slight cooling and increased flow may trigger spawning; fry are tiny and need biofilm to survive. Compatibility: Peaceful and non-aggressive toward other species; keep with other cool-water, high-flow species such as white cloud mountain minnows or danios.
