Malpulutta kretseri
Also known as: Ornate Paradisefish, Ornate Paradisefisch, Sri Lankan Paradisefish
Origin: Sri Lanka
Malpulutta kretseri is a critically endangered species found only in the wet zone lowland streams of southwestern Sri Lanka, where habitat loss has made it extremely rare in the wild. Males are stunning, displaying deep blue bodies with red-edged fins and long flowing tails. Only captive-bred specimens should be purchased to support conservation efforts.
Water: 23–27°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft and slightly acidic; quality water essential. Tank: 40L minimum, heavily planted, leaf litter, dim peaceful environment. Feeding: Live micro-invertebrates preferred; may accept high-quality frozen foods over time. Behaviour: Peaceful but timid; sensitive to disturbance. Compatibility: Species tank or with very small, ultra-peaceful fish only.
