Pimelodus ornatus
Also known as: Ornate Pimelodus, Ornate Catfish
Origin: Amazon basin
Pimelodus ornatus is found in Amazonian tributaries from Colombia to Brazil and stands out among its congeners for the elaborate, highly contrasted dark reticulations and blotches that cover its silver body. The pattern intensifies with age, making adults particularly striking. Long barbels trailing from the upper jaw extend well beyond the tail of younger fish.
In the aquarium, P. ornatus is an active, confident catfish that patrols open water more than many pimelodids. It is an opportunistic predator and should not be kept with small fish. It adapts readily to a variety of sinking foods and becomes bold once settled in a large, well-maintained tank.
This species requires excellent water quality and a spacious setup. It is most comfortable with open swimming areas combined with some large driftwood refuges.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; good flow and high oxygen. Tank: Minimum 300L; open swimming space with large driftwood pieces for shelter. Feeding: Omnivore; large sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, whole prawns; active feeder. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; no reliable captive breeding reports. Compatibility: Semi-aggressive; keep with medium-large robust species; avoid nano fish.
