Corydoras ortegai
Also known as: Ortega's Cory, Orange-fin Stripe Cory
Origin: Peru (Río Yavari)
Corydoras ortegai is a visually distinctive cory from the Yavari River in Peru, featuring three dark horizontal stripes along the lateral line and upper flank that are accented by a vivid orange dorsal fin. This combination of bold striping and coloured finnage makes it one of the more ornamental species in the genus and draws comparisons to the popular C. adolfoi.
Described scientifically in 2007, C. ortegai is a relatively recent addition to the hobby. Wild-caught specimens are occasionally imported through Peruvian fish exporters, though the species is not yet widely available. Care requirements are typical of Peruvian Amazon cories: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water, a fine substrate, and warm, well-oxygenated conditions.
This species is best kept in a species-specific or Peruvian biotope setup to fully appreciate its striking colouration. Feed generously with varied sinking foods and perform regular partial water changes to maintain the vivid orange dorsal colouration.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.0, temperature 23–27°C; clean, well-oxygenated water enhances colour. Tank: 60 L minimum with fine sand, driftwood, and moderate plant cover for a Peruvian biotope feel. Feeding: High-quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, and Mysis shrimp to maintain colour intensity. Breeding: Not widely documented; typical cory approach with cool water change and protein-rich conditioning. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal for Peruvian biotope tanks with tetras and peaceful cichlids.
