Hyphessobrycon orteguasae
Also known as: Orteguasa Tetra
Origin: Colombia (Orteguaza River, upper Caquetá)
Hyphessobrycon orteguasae is native to the Orteguaza River in Caquetá, Colombia, part of the upper Caquetá drainage. It features a neon lateral stripe with a characteristic black shoulder spot and reddish fin markings, providing an attractive blend of color and pattern uncommon among the many plain Hyphessobrycon species. Its peaceful demeanor and modest care requirements make it suitable for hobbyists with some experience. Seldom seen in the trade, it appeals to collectors seeking unusual Colombian tetras. It thrives in soft to moderately soft water with light acidity, planted surroundings, and stable temperatures.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic; pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–28 °C. Water changes of 20–25% weekly recommended. Tank: 60 L minimum; planted tank with some open water. Use dark substrate to intensify colors. Feeding: Omnivore; micro-pellets, quality flake, frozen cyclops, daphnia, and occasional live foods. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; condition with live foods; use soft acidic water over fine plants. Compatibility: Peaceful; compatible with other small Colombian or Amazonian species.
