About

The Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a large, charismatic cichlid native to the Amazon River basin in South America, with wild populations found in Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and Ecuador. In the wild, Oscars inhabit slow-moving rivers, floodplains, and lakes with soft, warm, slightly acidic water and abundant cover from submerged logs and vegetation.

Wild-type Oscars display a dark olive to charcoal body overlaid with irregular orange-red marbling and a distinctive false eyespot (ocellus) at the base of the caudal fin, believed to deter predators. Captive-bred colour varieties include tiger, red, albino, and lemon Oscars, all sharing the same robust body shape and demanding care requirements.

Oscars are highly intelligent fish capable of recognising individual humans, begging for food, and even manipulating objects in their tank. They are notorious rearrangers of aquarium décor, uprooting plants and moving rocks. Their strong personality makes them fascinating to keep, but their size, aggression toward smaller fish, and heavy bioload mean they are best housed alone or with similarly sized, robust cichlids.

Full-grown adults reach up to 35 cm and produce significant waste, necessitating excellent filtration. Despite their demanding requirements, Oscars are considered beginner-friendly among large cichlids due to their forgiving nature regarding water parameters and their hardy constitution.

Care Guide

Tank Setup Oscars require a minimum 300-liter aquarium for a single adult, with additional space for each extra fish. Use a robust, heavy substrate such as coarse gravel or sand, and anchor décor securely as Oscars will rearrange anything loose. Avoid delicate live plants; opt for hardy species like Anubias attached to rocks or driftwood, or use artificial plants. Strong filtration with a high turnover rate is essential due to their heavy bioload.

Water Parameters Maintain temperature at 23–28°C and pH 6.0–7.5, with GH 2–15. Oscars tolerate moderate water hardness but thrive in soft to medium water. Perform 25–30% water changes weekly, or more frequently if nitrate levels rise above 20 ppm. A reliable canister filter rated for at least twice the tank volume is recommended.

Feeding Oscars are carnivorous and accept a wide range of foods. A high-quality large cichlid pellet should form the staple. Supplement with frozen krill, earthworms, large bloodworms, and occasional feeder fish if disease-free. Avoid excessive feeder goldfish, which are nutritionally poor and disease risks. Feed once or twice daily; remove uneaten food promptly.

Tankmates Oscars are best kept alone or with large, equally aggressive cichlids such as Jack Dempseys or Green Terrors. Avoid housing with small fish, which will be eaten. Pairs can coexist in large tanks, but aggression between individuals is common. Introduce tankmates simultaneously to reduce territorial disputes.

Health and Maintenance Oscars are susceptible to hole-in-the-head disease (HLLE), typically linked to poor water quality and nutritional deficiencies. Prevent this by maintaining pristine water conditions and offering a varied, vitamin-rich diet. Regular observation for lesions, fin damage, or behavioral changes is advised.
