Osphronemus exodon
Also known as: Elephant Ear Gourami, Osphronemus exodon
Origin: Borneo
Osphronemus exodon is one of four recognised Giant Gourami species, distinguished from O. goramy by its toothed jaws and preference for blackwater river systems in Borneo. It can attain a large size and requires a very large, well-filtered aquarium. Its bold personality and impressive size make it a centrepiece species for dedicated large-tank hobbyists.
Water: temp 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft, tannin-stained water preferred. Tank: minimum 500L for adult fish; provide large open areas and sturdy décor. Feeding: omnivore — accepts large pellets, earthworms, fruit, prawns, and plant material. Behaviour: semi-aggressive; territorial towards conspecifics; predatory towards small fish. Compatibility: best kept alone or with large, robust fish only.
